What I look for in a photo?

When viewing a photograph, I look for work that thoroughly engages the viewer. I believe clarity of thought and vision are essential and must be evident in the image regardless of the methods or techniques employed. To me, a photograph is a conscious effort by the photographer to provoke an emotional or intellectual response in the viewer. I tend towards images that exhibit visual specificity, thoughtfulness and a sense of individuality.

OUR JUROR'S COMMENTS ABOUT EXPO 2006:

I am very honored and thankful to have had the privilege of judging the Hawai’i Photo Expo for 2006.  All of the artists who submitted their work should be proud of their efforts.  With almost 200 images, the sheer quantity of images made my task formidable. The overall quality of the images entered made the selection process all the more difficult.  Often, I found that small details made the difference between putting the print into the exhibition or omitting it.  There were many images that I really wanted to include but could not due to technical problems or lack of clarity in content.  For those, I highly recommend examining your entire process from the beginning to the final product, and to make no compromises along the way.  To the award winners, congratulations on producing some truly outstanding work.
